Simon Cook, 53 of Nicholls Terrace, Launceston

A TWISTED paedophile who tried to rape a seven-year-old boy has been jailed for 13 years.

Dangerous Simon Cook, 53, who a judge branded a potential risk to the public in the future, would have to satisfy a parole board that he was safe to be released before he leaves prison, Truro Crown Court heard.

Cook, of Nicholls Terrace, Launceston, ingratiated himself with his young victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in the early 2000s in Falmouth.

He tried to rape him at a time when he thought the boy’s parents were not nearby.

Judge Simon Carr said: “In fact, his mother came back and caught you attempting to rape her son.”

He added that there were “clear elements of grooming and threats” in Cook’s behaviour towards the youngster.

“Police were called but [the boy], at that tender age and as a result of what you said to him, was not strong enough to tell the police what happened,” he said.

The court heard Cook sexually assaulted a second boy, who was a teenager, in 2007.

Judge Carr said: “The effect of what you did was written on their faces [when they gave evidence].

“They will live, I suspect, the rest of their lives with the consequences of what you did to them.”

Cook was convicted by a jury of one count of attempted rape, one of assault by penetration and one of sexual assault.

Ed Bailey, for the defence, said his client was still in a state of total denial about the matters and did not agree with the jury’s verdict, but respected it.

Mr Bailey said Cook had been a hardworking man for much of his life but had become isolated in the past few years.

Sentencing him, Judge Carr said: “You are still in complete denial of what you did, [showing] no remorse and no empathy to those you so badly hurt.”

He added that he considered Cook a dangerous offender and passed an extended sentence.

Cook was imprisoned for 13 years with an extended period on licence of six years, making the total sentence 19 years.

He will serve at least two-thirds of the 13 in custody and will have to be deemed safe by a parole board before release.

He will be subject to licence conditions until 2034.

Jason Packer, 45 of Balliol Road, Buckland

A justice campaigner and self-described ‘anti-paedophile’ has been jailed for possession of child pornography.

Jason Packer, 45, claimed the images, which were on a document named ‘Explosive Hidden Hancock File’, had been planted onto his computer and fought his prosecution until the very end of the £2,800 court case, The News reports.

The children in the images were between five and 10 and other extreme pornography also found on his computer included women being raped and killed.

The children’s entertainer, described by Recorder Frank Abbott as a ‘staunch campaigner’, was handed a a six-month sentence for the extreme images and a 12-month sentence for the child abuse, to run concurrently.

‘At the end of the day, before me is a man who purports to be a person against child pornography, a person who is someone who is against corruption of politicians, various types of child abuse, and has got images of the same on his computer,’ Mr Abbott said.

‘It seems to me there really isn’t any excuse whatsoever.’
